Every Indian couple dreams of planning their honeymoon in Switzerland, thanks to Mr. Yash Chopra. He shot many of his famous films like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Veer Zara against the backdrop of beautiful Swiss landscapes. The Swiss government even honoured him for rediscovering Switzerland.
Switzerland is pure nature’s paradise! No matter which direction you look in, it looks like the perfect town taken right out of a storybook! Imagine cool weather, snow-covered Alps, waterfalls, lakes, the greenest of the grass with wild flowers, cows grazing and the only sound that you hear is of tinkling bells strung around the neck of the cows…pure bliss!
For your honeymoon in Switzerland, I’ve listed below the top 5 places that you must visit.
1. Interlaken City
This beautiful and quaint town nestled between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, is a treat to the eyes! It houses a large central park overlooking the rest of the town, and gives magnificent views of snow-covered Jungfrau.
Walk down the roads of Interlaken lined with Swiss houses and souvenir shops on both sides and take in the beauty of this wonderful town letting nature’s charm settle over you.
There are many attractions in Interlaken like the very picturesque and famous Casino Kursaal and its pretty flower clock. The town has also become famous as a popular adventure destination, be it paragliding, hiking, rafting and even sky diving.
You can also take a Swiss barbecue cruise and try some of the Swiss delicacies as you sail on the beautiful Lake Brienz!
Jungfrau is one of the highest peaks in the Alps, and the pretty cogwheel train takes you all the way up to this very peak! It’s not only visiting the glacier which is fantastic, but the journey on the toy train which is marvellous too.The climb uphill starts from the town of Lauterbrunnen which is a little ahead of Interlaken.
The moment the train starts, you get to see amazing landscapes of the valley on one side and mountains on the other. As you ascend, the air becomes cooler and snow cover becomes thicker and by the time you reach, you’re most likely to be covered in your woollens. Yes, the temperature during summer months can range between -5°C to 1°C!
Once you reach the top, there are many things to do there. You can visit the observatory to get 360 degree views of snow-covered Jungfrau, the ice museum in which everything including sculptures and walkways are made of ice and the glacier itself where you can get involved in some adventure sports or just have fun throwing fluffy snowballs at each other.
Don’t miss the Bollywood restaurant situated right at the top of Europe!
3. Mt Titlis
Mt. Titlis is another beautiful snow-covered peak in Switzerland. However the experience over here is different compared to Jungfrau as the journey to the glacier is via cable cars, also called gondolas.
Tip: You may want to give it a miss if you’ve already seen Jungfrau, as Jungfrau is much larger, higher and the train journey is very beautiful.
On the contrary, due to higher altitude, Jungfrau has lesser oxygen and air pressure and may lead to heaviness in the head and leave you feeling tired.
4. Trummelbach falls – a highlight in your honeymoon in Switzerland
Trummelbach falls are one of my favourite locations to visit in Switzerland. It is situated in the town of Lauterbrunnen, also known as the valley of waterfalls. However, these waterfalls are very different from what you would’ve ever seen. Trummelbach falls are a group of 10 thundering waterfalls fed by melting glaciers of Jungfrau, Eiger and Mönch. These falls are viewable within the dimly lit, damp tunnels where what amazes you is the force with which the water flows down into the valley. 20,000 litres of water per second and alongwith it carrying tonnes of boulders and debris. You can feel the cool spray of the waterfall on your face as the water gurgles and churns inside the tunnel. The falls have been declared by UNESCO as world natural heritage site.
Lucerne city is another famous tourist destination in Switzerland. The city is not so much known for its natural landscapes compared to the ones I’ve described above but other historic landmarks like the lion monument, the ancient wooden bridge called the Kapellbrück, the Lucerne river cruise and of course shopping.
It houses the famous store Bucherer which is best known for watches and high-end jewellery. You can also find cheaper options of shopping in Lucerne, Swiss watches, chocolates, and cowbells souvenir’s would certainly be good memories to take back from a honeymoon in Switzerland!
Don’t forget to sit out on a cool summer night and dip into the hot Swiss cheese fondue to add that romantic zing to your honeymoon in Switzerland!
